Each work in the Broken Faces series begins on paper. The sketch starts in pencil, followed by layers of oil pen to establish the forms. Color is then introduced as a way of experimenting with the palette and deciding what will eventually make its way onto the canvas.

This original study later developed into one of the finished paintings from the Broken Faces series. The completed painting that grew from this drawing is shown in the product photos, giving a look at the progression from the first idea to the final work.
